After the conquest of Malacca by Afonso de Albuquerque at the very beginning of the 16th century, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to reach Siam. From then onwards they maintained close relations with this Asian power. Not only did they barter but they also exchanged ideas and techniques. This exchange included diplomatic and military support, as well as the spread of Christianity. As a result of these close relations, small Luso-Siamese communities began to emerge at several Siamese ports. These communities were granted a privileged status by the local authorities.
