António Manuel Maria Pacheco Jorge da Silva was born on the 4th of July 1938 in his grandfather’s house at 20 Rua da Penha in Macau. He attended King George V School in Hong Kong and later gained his degree in architecture at the Portsmouth School of Architecture, now Portsmouth University, in Hampshire, England. He practised his profession in the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the United States of America, Hong Kong and Macau. His interest in the history of the Portuguese people and the genealogy of the Macaenses led to the publication of several books and articles on the subject. In 1996, his first book, The Portuguese – An Outline History of their Origin and Voyages of Discovery, was published. He realised that the Diaspora Macaense after World War II would eventually lead to the dissipation of the history, culture and collective memory of the Macaense people. His concern to record this before it vanished led several years of research, writing and collecting photographs, culminating in the publication of The Portuguese Community in Hong Kong in 2007.In 2009 his next book, Diaspora Macaense to California, was written telling the story of how the largest group from the Hong Kong community settled in California. His fourth book, The Portuguese Community in Hong Kong – Volume II, published in 2010, complements the earlier volume. It looks at aspects of the daily lives of many families in that community following World War II whose descendants are now to be found in many parts of the world. The Portuguese Community in Shanghai tells of a community shattered by many years of war and revolution. Their exodus from that part of China preceded that of the Hong Kong Portuguese community by almost ten years. Most left all their belongings behind, including family albums. Much has been lost, but what survives is a powerful record of a strong community, proud of its heritage and confident in the role it played in the unique city of Shanghai.THE PORTUGUESE COMMUNITY IN SHANGHAIAntónio M.
