Wu WeishanAt National Art Museum of China24th September 2020The grand opening of With Dust, With Light——Contemporary Glass Art Exhibition by Meng Shu is greeted with the beautiful autumn of Macao. This is an exhibition of large scale and high level, showing the young artist, Dr. Meng Shu’s artistic works in the field of glass art creation. Nearly 50 pieces of her glass artworks being selected, fully demonstrate her creation and research achievements for the past six years. Meng Shu, owing the triple identities of professor, scholar and artist, has a broad vision of knowledge and solid cultural deposits. After graduating with a Master’s Degree from China Academy of Art, she has continuously been teaching in university. Over the past decade, she has held several solo exhibitions, participated in and curated many art exhibitions, and achieved certain achievements. As Meng Shu's doctoral supervisor, it is during her six years of doctoral study that makes me really understand her. For her doctoral dissertation Soul Soothing and Retrospection of Modern Civilization——Public Art Research on the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, she had devoted all her energies. Afterwards, she curated Memory and Release of the Pain——Contemporary Art Exhibition at the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, and participated it with her White Night series of glass works. She once told me, "Professor, my doctoral thesis has given me a deep understanding of the war and killing of human beings in modern civilization at the philosophical level. It is the most painful trek for my soul. From then on, I have made my mind to follow your path——turn from theoretical research to research-based creation.” Not only did she make it, also she has done an extremely good job, for which I am truly happy! The deepest impression Meng Shu has left me is her strong sense of innovation and creative spirit of transcendence. She can freely use ceramics, glass, wood and other comprehensive materials to create sculptures and public art works. What is particularly worth mentioning is her ever-more unique personal style and research perspectives shown in recent years. The beauty of art makes man an integral part of nature. The integration of art and reality coincides with ancient Chinese people’s imagination of the Earth being square and Heaven being round. When the spirit reaches a certain level, the boundary between subjective and objective is blurred. On the one hand, the intangible gradually become illusions and images, which are cast into forms by the artist; on the other hand, the tangible become intangible...The glass art works exhibited this time have collectively reflected Meng Shu's unique understanding of nature and life. Sensibility and reason, form and content, regularity and purpose, are all given "life activation" on the aesthetic object——glass. For the long history and culture of our motherland and the revitalization of art in the great era, I am highly grateful. I am looking forward to seeing more artists, especially young artists, keep making new contributions to China's art cause in the new era, to the great rejuvena-tion of the Chinese nation, and to the greater brilliance of human civilization!. 010 011
• It is very much delighted to find in Macao there is a group of young scholars who are devoted to integrating art and science, and promot-ing the spiritual connotation of “The True, the Good and the Beautiful”. Among them, Professor Meng Shu is the main force. Through The Star Dust--Contemporary Glass Exhibition by Meng Shu, she is going to further impress us showing her efforts and enthusiasm in this respect.Professor Meng is enthusiastic in expressing the mystery of the universe through artworks made of dimensional glass. The truth is, be it by writing or painting, it is rather difficult to well describe the brilliance of planetary nebula or stellar forming area, and in the meantime, catch the sight of the sky with dotted stars scattering about. However, in this exhibition we are able to fully appreciate the colorful and dreamlike interstellar space. As a researcher on planetary science, constantly I would ponder how to adopt more intuitive methods to allow the public to experience various phenomena which they have never experienced before in the solar system, thus generating stronger sense of curiosity and closeness. Taking the initiative, the renowned Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at the University of Arizona has held a series of The Art of Planetary Science Exhibition, which has become the highlight of the Laboratory. Similarly, in the recent science-fiction movie called Arrival, the shape of the UFO actually models after that of Asteroid 15, Eunomia. The first time I saw Professor. Meng’s glass and ceramics artworks, a fascinating idea occurred to me: using UFO as a model, can we connect the past with the future, and congeal the cause and effect into eternity? The movie Arrival is adapted from the novel Story of Your Life, written by a Chinese-American named Ted Jiang. In this short story, Ted Jiang interprets his understanding of a physical principle (The law of Pierre de Fermat) into a science fiction with rich life philosophy, leading its audience up to meaningful afterthoughts. I very much hope Professor. Meng’s artworks, brimming with passion and efforts, would achieve the same effect. To reflect on the future of the world and to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration between humanities and technology, some leading science and technology schools are spawning dialogue platforms for artists, scientists and engineers, and even establishing bases for the cultivation of science fiction writers. The Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) is a case in point. There you will see software engineers or physicists spend their days talking with sculptors about all kinds of peculiar ideas. In addition, every year UCSD holds a six-week long Science Fiction Writing Workshop, attracting imaginative young writers nationwide and worldwide. This investment in imagination, which I believe will contribute to the country and society at large with a disproportionate rate of return, is probably the direction most worthy of consideration in the development blueprint of Macao. The key to the realization of the art and technology dialogue platform mentioned above is those talents who are willing to commit themselves to the cause. For this I am full of expectations for Professor Meng Shu and her aspiring friends of the same aspirations. I wish The Star Dust——Contemporary Glass Exhibition by Meng Shu a great success, marking the beginning of making Macau University of Science and Technology a platform for artists and scientists to co-create as well as a paradise for science fiction writers.ProfileBorn in 1947, Wing-Huen Ip is an internationally renowned space physics scientist, academician of the International Academy of Astronautics, and new academician of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
The whole work is composed of 140 hand-blown glass spheres of various sizes, presenting a translucent, artistic and mysterious looking. The blue part in the middle of the sphere, looking like a deep ocean and a starry sky unbounded and deep, symbolizes human spirit and the spirit world; the surrounding white part, as it has been wrapped with luminous powder during the production process, would shim-mer at night when being exposed to the rays of light—a symbol of ice- and snow-melting, and everything coming back to life eventually. The shape of bubble rising in the middle of the sphere represents the initial form of the origin of most lives. Due to the special optical principles, when viewed from the top, each bubble will form into a blue lotus. The exterior of the sphere is either wrapped with thorny or dense black lines, an emblem of human’s gradual liberation from bondage, the attainment of spiritual freedom and the spiritual relief due to mutual understanding and resolution of differences. Through this work, the artist triggers people's reflection on modern civilization and the way to soothe people's soul. The work is selected by Memory and Release of the Pain— Contemporary Art Exhibition (the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, May - November 2018) and in December 2019, it is collected by and displayed at China Cultural Center in Tokyo (Japan) for permanence. A coisa mais incompreensível do universo é que ele é compreensível.——Albert Einstein, 1879-1955In the long forming process of the universe, everything is “gathering” and “disassociating”, as well as “being born” and “dying” all the time. It is connected and combined with each other to form new organic molecules generation after generation. Since ancient time, people have been trying to comprehend their position and existence through observing and thinking the occurrence and transformation of the universe. The process of scientific and artistic exploration is a philosophical thinking process. Science explores the law and comprehends chaos at the same time. There is an interesting similarity between the samsara concept generated by human consciousness and the cosmic cognition in scientific thinking.I tried to combine glass, wood and sandstone in my creation. To present the interesting similarity between art thinking and scientific thinking, and to explore the mystery of being, I used glass to express the impermanence of life and a powerful branch growing on the cliff to express the idea of emptiness and infinity. The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.——Albert Einstein, 1879-1955084 085

In ancient Chinese cosmology, human beings and animals are both regarded as part of the entity of the Universe, and they possess the same soul and spirituality. Traditional sculptures of Chinese animals have permeated the human consciousness of life and strengthened it. In the present work, traditional sculptures of Chinese animals are transformed into unglazed pottery and its traditional meaning is deconstructed by using modern comprehensive materials. The dialogue among materials makes a combination between history and reality, tradition and modernity and a brand-new visual feast is thus created.Animal, Fetich, Object – Contemporary Ceramic Art by Meng Shu (2012)Animal, Fetiche, Objecto – Arte em Cerâmica Contemporânea d Meng Shu ( 012)126127
