Like my love for music, and influenced by my maternal grand-aunt Grannie, drawing and water colors came easily to me. My grandfather Alberto Eduardo de Selavisa Alves lived with us and taught me and my sisters calligraphy, and my Uncle Eras taught me sketching and freehand drawing. I've enjoyed painting and water color rendering since my school days under the direction of my fine arts teacher, Dr. Fernando de Lara Reis in the 1940s. Since my university years I’ve executed numerous color perspective render- ings of Prof. R. Gordon Brown’s architectural comissions, e.g.: Hong Kong City Hall, Central Government Offices in Jessselton, and Wah Yan College Chapel, Kowloon, that were selected and exhibited at The Royal Academy in London. I have also spent over twenty years teaching graphic presentation at the University of Hong Kong, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Manitoba. I now have the time to enjoy water color painting, however the hardest decision has been what to draw and paint. My decision resulted from my design for the covers of my friend’s music books: Hong Kong Fifties and Fifties Evening. I followed these with Macau Forties, that lead me to paint the many places I have spent time working on architectural and urban design projects. Gustavo da Roza Como meu grande gosto da música, e a influência da minha Tia-Avó, desenho e aguarelas foram sempre fácil. Meu avõ, Alberto Eduardo de Selavisa Alves, ou Atuto, vivia na nossa casa e ensinou-me e às minhas irmãs o gosto e arte da caligrafia, e meu Tio Erasmus ensinou-me desenho à vista. Sempre tive gosto de desenhar e pintar aguarelas desde meus anos no Liceu em Macau, bem dirigido pelo Sr. Dr. Fernando de Lara Reis, nos anos quarenta. Desde meus anos universitários tenho feito numerosas perspectivas com cores dos projectos arquitectóni- cos do Prof. R. Gordon Brown, como do City Hall de Hong Kong, Gabinetes do Governo, Jesselton, e a Capela do Colégio de Wah Yan em Kowloon, que foram bem selecionados e exibidos na Academia Real em Londres. Tambem fui professor de desenho por mais vinte anos na Universidade de Hong Kong, Universidade de California em Berke- ley, e Universidade de Manitoba. Tenho gosto em pintar aguarelas, mas decisão mais difícil foi a escolha de que temas, edifício, conjunto urbano ou paisagem. Esta decisão foi feito com um desenho para a capa dos livros musicais dum amigo, para a qual pintei Hong Kong nos Anos Cinquenta e Anos Cinquenta a Noite. A seguir, desenhei a paisagem de Macau nos Anos Quarenta, que me estimulou a pintar as cidades e lugares onde fiz meus projectos arquitectónicos. Gustavo da Roza 在外姨婆的薰陶下，我愛上了繪畫。一切就像我對音樂的熱愛般來得自然。同一屋簷下的外公區華士和舅父伊拉斯是我的啟蒙老師，他們分別教我書法、素描和繪圖。踏入四十年代，美術老師利拉斯博士則發掘了我對水彩畫的無窮興趣。 我在大學遇上了布朗教授。香港大會堂、沙巴政府合署和九龍華仁書院教堂等，均由他擔任建築師。在他的提攜下，我有幸能為這些建築畫下一幅又一幅透視圖。其後它們更獲選在英國皇家藝術學院展出。往後數十年間，我輾轉任教於香港大學、美國加州大學柏克萊分校及加拿大緬省大學。 我現在終於能重拾對水彩畫的興趣。但該畫些什麼好呢？因緣際會，我的好友黃允炤邀請我為他的兩本音樂結集繪畫封面，我便為他畫了《五十年代香港》和《五十年代香江夜色》。由此出發，我畫下了《四十年代澳門》，還有很多我曾參與興建、並留下回憶的城市、與地方。 羅嘉

1 Hong Kong Fifties This harbour view from Tsim Sha Tsui was painted for my design of the cover of my good friend’s music book “The Ignatius Wong Collection of Nostalgic Songs” in the summer of 2003. I was well assisted by the good photographic collection of the Hong Kong Government Archives and the Star Ferry Co. This water colour was reproduced into a signed limited edition of fifty prints as advised by my dear wife Gloria, as framed gifts for the fiftieth wedding anniversary gift to my sister Teresa and her husband Fred Hyndman. 1 Hong Kong nos Anos Cinquenta Esta vista do porto foi pintada por mim, no Verão de 2003, para ilustrar a capa do livro “The Ignatius Wong Collection of Nostalgic Songs”, uma obra sobre música da autoria de um amigo. Para a sua realização contei com a colecção de fotografia do Star Ferry Co. Por solicitação da minha mulher Glória, esta aguarela foi reproduzida numa edição limitada de cinquenta cópias, para oferecer a minha irmã Teresa e seu marido Fred Hyndman por ocasião da celebração dos seus cinquenta anos de casamento. 一 五十年代香港 此為我替好友黃允炤編於二零零三年《黃允炤懷舊歌曲鋼琴集》所繪的封面。畫中呈現出從尖沙咀海旁望向維港對岸的景色。此畫得以完成實有賴香港政府檔案和天星小輪為我提供珍貴照片。 我將此畫限量印製五十張。在太太高羅莉提議下，我裱好其中一張，贈予姐姐杜麗沙及姐夫佛烈海民，以賀他倆金婚之喜。
2 Fifties Evening Due to the very large number of ninety eight songs, my friend’s publication had to be printed in two volumes for which I painted this second watercolour of the harbour from the identical station point at Tsim Sha Tsui in the evening. With this identical view as in Hong Kong Fifties, I relocated the Star ferries and the Chinese junks, added illumination to the buildings, and set the Victoria Peak’s skyline against a red sunset sky for an evening harbour view. 2 Anos Cinquenta a Noite O livro “The Ignatius Wong Collection of Nostalgic Songs”, de um grande amigo, contém noventa e oito canções e foi por isso necessário dividi-lo em dois volumes. Para a ilustração desse segundo volume pintei esta segunda aguarela, uma vista nocturna de Hong Kong a partir de Tsim Sha Tsui. Nesta segunda vista de “Hong Kong nos Anos Cinquenta”, reposicionei os “ferries” e juncos Chineses, adicionei iluminação aos edifícios, e coloquei a ilha de Hong Kong contra o avermelhado do pôr do sol, criando uma vista do porto ao anoitecer. 二 五十年代香江夜色 二零零三年，好友黃允炤合共挑選了九十八首懷舊歌曲作結集出版。篇幅所限，歌曲須分兩冊出版。我於是畫下《五十年代香江夜色》作為第二冊的封面，並與《五十年代香港》遙遙呼應。 此畫跟《五十年代香港》同出一轍，都是從尖沙咀海旁望向維港對岸。不同的是，中環一帶華燈初上，日暮紅霞則為中式帆船和天星小輪照亮歸途。
3 Macau in the Forties This watercolor of Macau shows where I grew up and received my primary and liceu education. My memory provided this view from the delta of the Pearl River with Penha hill on the left and Guia hill with its lighthouse on the right framing Praia Grande. Only two ten-storey highrise structures existed, the Hotel Central and the Hotel Grande along the northside of Almeida Ribeiro Avenue. I took great pleasure painting the illuminated skyscape lit by the earliest lighthouse in the Far East, the primary visual objective of our own seafaring Portuguese ancestors. 3 Macau nos Anos Quarenta Macau, o lugar onde cresci. Estudei na Escola Primária e Liceu Nacional Infante D. Henrique. Esta vista do delta do Rio das Pérolas foi pintada de memória. À esquerda, o monte da Penha e, à direita, o monte da Guia, coroado pelo farol, enquadram a Baía da Praia Grande. Apenas dois edifícios de vários pisos, o Hotel Central e o Grand Hotel surgem no extremo norte da Avenida Almeida Ribeiro. Foi com grande prazer que pintei a luz do primeiro farol construído no Extremo Oriente, a iluminar o mar do Sul da China sobre o monte da guia, talvez, a primeira imagem que os nossos antepassados navegadores tiveram da nossa terra. 三 四十年代澳門 澳門，一個滿載我小學、中學回憶的地方。從珠江口回望，左邊為主教山，亦稱西望洋山。右邊為燈塔座落之松山，亦稱東望洋山。南灣則位處兩山之間。當時，樓高十層的大廈只有兩幢：位於新馬路，現稱新中央酒店的中央酒店及已結業之國際酒店。 我十分高興可在此繪畫松山燈塔。此遠東最古老燈塔為我葡萄牙先祖於一八六四年所建，一直為航海家渡航，至今依舊照耀著海洋。
4 Manitoba Harvest Although living in the city of Winnipeg for three decades, my fondest memory is the continuous and total flatness of the prairies stretching in all directions. This open view is as widely magnificient as the views sailing across oceans. Farmlands all around can be anywhere around Winnipeg with grain growing acreage. Here we have the distant view of grain elevators with an occasional church steeple anchoring the vanishing point of the highway as it receeds through the golden hues of rich grain growing fields in harvest. 4 Colheita de Manitoba Apesar de ter vivido mais de trinta anos na cidade de Winnipeg, uma das minhas memórias mais queridas é a da planície contienua das pradarias que se estendem a perder de vista. Estas vistas abertas são tão magníficas como as que os marinheiros têm sobre os oceanos. As quintas de cultivo de cereais, situadas em redor da cidade, são completemente planas por centenas de quilómetros. Pelos campos dourados contempla-nos o silêncio pontuado apenas pela torre de uma igreja criando um ponto de fuga no horizonte da estrada de campos prontos para a colheita. 四 緬尼托巴秋收 旅居溫尼伯三十年，我始終忘不了平坦、沒盡頭的大草原。就像大海一樣壯麗。 一片金黃延續到地盡頭。遠方有穀倉，有收割的人，還有尖頂的小教堂。
5 Manitoba Borealis Identical view as Manitoba Harvest this painting shows again the spectacular and wide vista of the Canadian prairies. The northern lights, always in motion, illuminate the white winter landscape beneath the vast blue sky, with the aurora borealis creating the strongest visual image of the prairies. These two Manitoba paintings should be framed and exhibited together. 5 Boreal de Manitoba Esta mesma vista de Manitoba mostra a extraordinária paisagem das planícies Canadianas. Sempre em movimento a aurora boreal ilumina o branco do Inverno sob o azul do céu, criando esta maravilhosa imagem da pradaria. As duas aguarelas de Manitoba deverão ser emolduradas e exibidas conjuntamente. 五 緬尼托巴極光 此畫角度與前作《緬尼托巴秋收》如出一轍，卻凸顯出緬尼托巴大草原的另一種壯麗。不停移動的紫紅極光、閃白的雪地、浩瀚的藍天。三色互相輝映，賞心奪目。 《緬尼托巴秋收》和《緬尼托巴極光》，應一併展示，缺一不可。
6 The Bund in Shanghai What better view for this international city built on the banks of Huangpu River as it flows the last mile to the Yangtze River and out to the China Sea. Photographs of these western buildings completed in the 1930s prior to World War II combined with a scaled city map showing The Bund, or Zhongshan Dong Lu, provided necessary information for this elevation watercolour. This renown and historical street faced docked ocean liners and freighters as they look east to Pudong across the Huang Pu River. Fortunately this will not be changed, as all buildings are preserved by heritage societies and governing authorities. 6 The Bund em Xangai Qual será a melhor vista desta cidade internacional, situada a poente do Rio Huangpu e que sei estende até ao Rio Yangtze e ao Mar da China ? Pintei esta aguarela recorrendo a fotografias destes edifícios construídos pelos estrangeiros nos anos trinta, antes da Segunda Guerra Mundial, e ainda de um mapa desta famosa e conhecida avenida chamada “The Bund” ou “Zhongshan Dong Lu”, em Chinês. A avenida situa-se em frente do Pudong, onde estão ancorados os barcos internacionais. Felizmente que associações do património Chinês estabeleceram leis para preservar estes edifícios a título perpétuo. 六 上海灘 君不見黃浦江東匯揚子，上海灘屹立依然。 中山東一路，上海外灘，素有萬國建築博覽群之美譽。諸等建築早建於二次大戰之前。此一上海外灘正面圖，乃根據照片存檔及地圖所畫成。站於此歷史大道放眼望去，跨過黃埔江遠洋郵輪，便是浦東之明珠夜景。 時代巨輪無情，猶幸建築群已被列入全國重點文物保護單位，此情此景，當可不變。
7 Vancouver from Home This spectacular view of Vancouver’s downtown, enjoyed by my dear wife Gloria and I over a decade is from our home at Queens Avenue in the British Properties of West Vancouver. I particularly enjoyed painting cruise ships sailing out every weekend to Alaska, and the seaplanes to and from Vancouver Island seventy kilometers to the west. 7 Vancouver da nossa Casa Esta vista da cidade de Vancouver foi frequentemente contemplada pela minha esposa Glória e por mim ao longo de mais duma década: é a vista da nossa casa na Queens Avenue em West Vancouver. Pintei os barcos navegando todos os fins-de-semana para o Alaska e, os aviões que levantavam voo ou aterravam na Ilha de Vancouver cerca de setenta quilómetros a poente. 七 外望溫哥華 太太高羅莉和我最喜歡在家欣賞溫哥華的壯麗景色。光陰似箭，日月如梭，居於西溫皇后路竟已有十年之久。 畫中左方從獅門橋下駛過的，是逢週末開往阿拉斯加的郵輪。右方的水上飛機則剛從七十公里外的溫哥華島歸航。
8 Ski and Sail Vancouver Vancouver is the only city in the world you can ski downhill and sail the same day. This view from Kitsilano Beach looks northward to sailboats on English Bay. Stanley Park is on the left in front of the illumminated Lions Gate Bridge with West Vancouver’s homes sloping up to the lit-up ski runs of Grouse Mountain, creating this view to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. 8 Vancouver Esqui e a Vela Vancouver é a unica cidade do mundo onde é possivel fazer esqui e a vela no mesmo dia. Esta vista da Kitsilano Bay mostra a zona norte da English Bay onde os barcos estão ancorados. Stanley Park está à esquerda, em frente à iluminada ponte “Lions Gate Bridge”, com casas da zona de Vancouver ocidental a estenderem-se até as pistas de esqui da Grouse Mountain. Fica esta imagem magnífica da mais bela cidade do mundo. 八 滑雪揚帆：盡在溫哥華 滑雪、揚帆出海，本屬魚與熊掌，不可兼得。但溫哥華是例外。兩份閒情，一天盡享。要不，安坐傑斯蘭奴海灘，北望英吉列灣，片片風帆，亦為一件賞心樂事。 畫中左方有士丹利公園，放眼望去，公園後方的獅門橋則一直通往西溫哥華的住宅區。還有不論滑雪、觀光，也不能不到的松雞山。此情此境，畢生難忘。
9 San Francisco In spite of living here and driving daily to and from work at UC Berkeley in the 1950s, I had to come back a second time for a morning view of this spectacular view of San Francisco as the western sunlight every afternoon totally blinds anyone facing it from Treasure island. Although further to the north and past the right edge of this memorable view, I have included Alcatraz Island while I enjoyed drawing and water colouring the renown bridges, buildings, and landmarks of this city by the bay. 9 São Francisco Apesar de nos anos cinquenta ter vivido aqui, fazendo diariamente o caminho para o trabalho na Universidade de Califórnia em Berkeley, tive de voltar uma segunda vez para registar a vista matinal de São Francisco. Isto porque o sol poente cega completamente todos os que, a partir de Treasure Island, a desejarem contemplar à tarde. A ilha de Alcatraz é mais ao norte, e situa-se fora desta paiságem, mas decidi inclui-la quando comecei a desenhar e pintei os edifícios e pontes mais conhecidos e que caracterizam esta cidade. 九 三藩市 一九五零年代，我每天早上均駕車回加州大學柏克萊分校講課。沿奧克蘭海灣大橋西行，途經寶藏島時，映入眼簾之三藩市景色，尤其壯麗。但午後要賞此景則加倍困難，只因陽光猛烈得叫人目眩。 惡魔島本來不應於畫中出現。它實際位置比畫中所處為北，故應位於畫框右方之外。但我想，破例將此傳奇小島納入畫中，不但無傷大雅，更可將此港灣城市完整地呈現眼前。
10 The Forbidden City Searching for the best station point for a view of Tian An Men Square was quite an impossible task as all buildings were way too short and visually too small in this imensely spread out public square of this capital city. Back at my hotel I came across a tourist publication of the Forbidden City with this superb aerial view including its southern entrance. On the left is the Taimao (the Working People’s Palace of Culture), and on the right is She Je Tan (Altar of Land and Grain) also known as Sun Yat-sen Park. On the central axis are the formal entry gates of the Palace Museum: Tian An Men, Du An Men and Wu Men. 10 A Cidade Proíbida A procura da melhor perspectiva para pintar a Praça de Tian An Men foi difícil dada a baixa altura dos edifícios que a rodeiam, conferindo uma aparência muito diminuta à vasta praça da cidade capital dos Chineses. Mais tarde no meu hotel descobri um folheito turístico da Cidade Proibida com esta vista aérea do sul com as entradas formais. À a esquerda surge o Tai Mao (Palácio de Cultura dos Operários), e à direita o She Ji Tan (Altar da Terra e dos Cereais), também conhecido como o Jardim do Sun Yat-Sen. No eixo central podemos ver as entradas formais do Museu Palácio: Tian An Men, Du An Men e Wu Men. 十 紫禁城 城太大，而人太小。幾乎沒有地方能一窺天安門廣場之全豹。苦尋不果，幸得旅館一冊遊客特刊啟發，採用鳥瞰的角度，此畫才得以順利完成。 放眼望去，左邊為社稷壇、右邊為太廟。中軸線上，由下至上，順序為天安門、端門及午門。
11 Times Square Again to illustrate the cover of a follow-up publication by my very good friend entitled “The Ignatius Wong Collection of Broadway Songs” we jointly settled on this renown view where broadway plays were presented in the very heart of New York City. Musical notes were added to illustrate the contents of melodies and tunes we knew and enjoyed for many decades of the past century. 11 Times Square Esta aguarela foi igualmente pintada para ilustrar a capa duma nova publicação do meu amigo, “The Ignatius Wong Collection of Broadway Songs”. A escolha do lugar recaiu sobre esta vista bem conhecida onde decorreram muitas apresentações musicais da Broadway no centro de Nova Iorque. Foram adicionadas notas musicais para evocar melodias e canções que conhecemos e admirámos durante muitas décadas do século passado. 十一 時報廣場 此為我特意為好友所編《黃允炤百老匯歌曲鋼琴集》繪畫之封面。我和好友黃允炤一致通過以此百老匯音樂劇發祥地為鋼琴集之封面，不作他選。 畫布無聲，於是我畫上音符，向一首又一首伴我成長的經典曲目致意。
12 Picadilly Circus What else for my good friend’s follow-up publication of broadway songs, but the place where these Broadway plays were presented and enjoyed in the very heart of London ? The double decker bus and vehicular traffic with pedestrians are the major features of this fabulous capital city in spite of its renown collection of great architecture. 12 Picadilly Circus Que melhor vista para uma segunda capa do livro de música da Broadway que Picadilly Circus, no centro da cidade de Londres, onde tantas vezes foi tocada e apreciada ? O tráfico automóvel bem como os peões representam o movimento e a vida desta extraordinária cidade, no cenário da reconhecida reputação e da formosa qualidade da sua arquitectura. 十二 皮卡迪利圓環 此為《黃允炤百老匯歌曲鋼琴集》之另一封面。畫中為皮卡迪利圓環，無數百老匯不朽劇目，均曾於此一帶之劇場公演。 城內著名建築林立，但此幅由紅色巴士和行人交織出之景象可能更能代表倫敦。
13 Hong Kong Today Following the 2007 Encontro with our family and relatives in Macau, we all enjoyed the tram ride to Victoria Peak where we came across this spectacular aerial view of our harbour city. This view, anchored by the tallest high-rise tower, IFC on the reclaimed south shore of the harbor, is still one of the magnificient cities with both sea and mountains worldwide. 13 Hong Kong Hoje Na sequência do Encontro de 2007 em Macau com a nossa família e amigos, apreciámos conjuntamente a famosa e impressionante vista a partir de Victoria Peak, da magnífica cidade e do porto de Hong Kong. Esta vista, de mar e montanha, ancorada pelo edifício mais alto no aterro sul do porto, a torre IFC, continua a ser uma das mais espectaculares do mundo. 十三 今日香港 二零零七年，我相約一眾親友往澳門一聚。然後，我們回到香港，更坐纜車上山頂。我發覺，這個我曾經熟悉的海港，景色一日比一日壯麗。 畫中最高的是國際金融中心二期。它替香港舉世聞名的海岸線添上了最不可或缺的一筆。
14 University Avenue This cityscape was first named Queen’s Park for its foreground view of the roof of the Provincial Legislative Building. Responding to my request for a more appropriate name, my daughter Gina, a resident of this provincial capital, easily identified and appropriately named it University Avenue. I particularly enjoyed painting the CN Tower and the Skydome on the westerly right side, and the curved rear façade of Revell’s Toronto City Hall by the dense concentration of financial and comercial towers on the left or easterly side. 14 Avenida da Universidade Intitulei incialmente esta aguarela de “Queen’s Park” porque o Edifício Legislativo da Província de Ontário se situa em primeiro plano. Respondendo à minha necessidade de encontrar um título mais apropriado, a minha filha Gina, que mora e trabalha nesta cidade capital, identificou e nomeou esta obra apropriadamente: Avenida da Universidade. Foi com enorme prazer que pintei a Torre CN e o Skydome a ocidente à direita, e a oriente à esquerda a fachada curva do City Hall de Toronto, desenhada por Revell, junto à concentração dos arranha céus dos edifícios ligados à finança e ao comércio. 十四 大學路 畫中正前方乃安大略省政府立法院以及皇后公園，故我命名此畫《皇后公園》。身為當地居民，我的女兒珍娜卻認為《大學路》一名更為貼切。 畫中偏右的尖塔乃加鐵高塔，塔右邊為天虹體育館。畫中偏左的弧形建築則是多倫多市政大樓。
15 Expo 67 Montreal Couldn’t find an appropriate view of my personal favorite North American city, so I settled for this map of Expo 1967 World’s Fair where I built my national competition winning design for a single family home “L’Homme et son Foyer” Pavilion. All pavilions are identified with their French names at this most spectacular World’s Fair of the twentieth century, signalling the arrival and identity of the architectural creativity of our Canadian architects worldwide. 15 Expo 67 em Montreal Não consegui encontrar uma vista apropriada da minha cidade norte americana preferida, e acabei por pintar este mapa da Exposição Mundial de 1967, onde construí o trabalho vencedor de um concurso nacional para uma casa unifamiliar: o Pavilhão “O Homem e o seu Lar”. Todos os pavilhões estão identificados com nomes em francês neste mapa, que considero ser da melhor Exposição Mundial do século XX, assinalando a estreia e, de certa forma, a identidade criativa dos nossos arquitectos Canadianos no mundo. 十五 一九六七年滿地可世界博覽會 要找一個合適的角度來呈現我最喜愛的滿地可，實在極之困難。於是我畫了一九六七年滿地可世界博覽會的地圖。當中之查泰萊雜誌展館是我勝出加拿大全國比賽的單戶房屋設計，特此留念。 一個又一個以法文命名的展覽場館，標誌著二十世紀加拿大建築師的冒起，江山代有人才出。
16 Wascana Center Having spent three decades as an active member of the Architectural Advisory Board for the Wascana Center Authority in Regina, I must do a watercolor of this provincial capital city in the Canadian prairies. Totally flat, this urban centre around the beautifully landscaped and very well maintained Wascana Lake was designed and completed in the 1950s by the late American architect Minoru Yamasaki. 16 Centro Wascana Tendo sido membro nomeado da Comissão de Aconselhamento Arquitectónico para a Autoridade Central de Wascana, na cidade de Regina, foi com imenso prazer que pintei uma aguarela dedicada à bela cidade das pradarias. Este núcleo urbano, localizado junto do Lago de Wascana, muito bem cuidado e completamente plano, foi desenhado e construído nos anos cinquenta pelo conhecido arquitecto Americano, Minoru Yamasaki. 十六 華氏加拿中心 歷任利載拿的華氏加拿中心建築咨詢委員三十載，我定要以此世外桃源為題作一幅畫。 此平坦環境優美的中心由已故美國建築師山崎實於一九五零年代依華氏加拿湖地形而建。
17 Calgary Evening From the Husky Tower to the Bow River is what I want to show of this dynamic and vibrant city at the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The city of Calgary is known as the cowboy capital with its world renown and successful rodeo, the Calgary Stampede. I painted this city in the evening lit-up by its many buildings and street lights against a sunset prairie sky. The constant traffic flow illustrates the vitality, brilliance, and life of this southern Alberta city. 17 Calgary a Noite Da Torre de Husky até ao Rio Bow, eu queria mostrar esta cidade dinâmica e vibrante no sopé das montanhas rochosas do Canadá. Esta cidade de Calgary é conhecida como a capital dos “cowboys”, com o seu rodeo, o Calgary Stampede. Pintei esta vista da cidade ao pôr-do-sol com os seus edifícios e ruas iluminadas. O trânsito ilustra a vitalidade e a dinâmica desta cidade de Alberta. 十七 卡加利夜色 卡加利塔、保河，一左一右，就框起了我心目中的卡加利：洛磯山下的活力之都。每年七月，一連十天，享負盛名的卡加利牛仔節就在此舉行。牛仔之都得名於此。 夕陽徐徐落下大草原，繁華夜色代之而起。燈光不滅，象徵卡加利的生命力，生生不息、源源不絕。
18 Curling Dragon & Crouching Tiger As named by its people, this southern capital of China known as Nanjing, is unfortunately almost always covered by fog and/or polution. I deliberately chose to paint it in its normal grey condition to encourage its governing authorities on the urgency of cleaning its deplorable living environment for its citizens. This great industrial city and capital of Jiangsu Province straddles the Yangtze River, and is known for its two hills: The Curling Dragon and Crouching Tiger. Unfortunately the city of Nanjing is also known as the Forgotten Holocaust of World War II. 18 O Dragão Encaracolado e O Tigre Agachado Nome bem conhecido pelos habitantes desta capital do sul, Nanjing infelizmente hoje está quase completamente enevoada, coberta pelo nevoeiro e ar poluído. Escolhi essas pobres condições e vista em cinza para encorajar o governo local a melhorar as más condições ambientais. Esta cidade industrial que encobre o Rio Yangtze também serve como capital da Província de Jiangsu e é bem conhecida pelos seus montes, Dragão Encaracolado e Tigre Agachado. Infelizmente Nanjing é igualmente conhecida como uma das cidades que mais sofreu durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. 十八 龍蟠虎踞 南京，終年籠罩於塵霧之中。畫中我刻意表達其天色之陰暗，寄望南京市環境保護局能及早改善其市民之生活環境。 此長江下游之工業重鎮以龍蟠虎踞一景知名於世。還有不堪回首的南京大屠殺。
19 The Great Wall Instead of the customary tourists view closer to Beijing at Badaling, this view of the Great Wall is at Jinshanling. 200 kilometers north-east of the capital. Built in the Ming Dynasty five centuries ago, the pass along with the Great Wall was an important line of defence for the capital city of beijing. If enemy forces stormed up the fortification, defenders could make use of these specially constructed walls step by step to resist. The square shaped towers were used for housing troops and storing grain. 19 A Grande Muralha Em vez das vistas mais conhecidas por turistas como Badaling, esta vista da Grande Muralha é de Jinshanling, 200 quilómetros a nordeste da cidade capital. Construiída há mais de cinco séculos na Dinastia Ming esta Grande Muralha serviu como importante linha de defesa de cidade capital de Pequim. A muralha em Jinshanling era usada para defesa contra tropas invasoras. As torres quadradas foram construídas para habitação das tropas e armazenamento de cereais. 十九 萬里長城 作此畫時，我刻意捨較近之八達嶺，而取位於北京東北二百公里之金山嶺。金山嶺長城，始建於明代，西起古北口，東臨望京樓，為全國重點文物保護單位之一。 古往今來，長城均是北京防禦工事的重要據點。堅穩的城牆，不但可抵禦外敵南下，其城樓更可作糧倉、軍營之用。
20 Macau Today In search for a scenery recognizable by our former residents resulted in this aerial view from Macau Tower, built by our own Casino magnate Comendador Stanley Ho. This aerial view overlooks two lakes created in front of Praia Grande with Avenida Republica surmounted by the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha and the Residence of our Consul General of Portugal in the former Bela Vista Hotel. The peninsula stretches northward to the high density development with new casino towers fronting Guia Hill with the earliest lighthouse in the Far East built by our Portuguese forefathers. Hence we cannot paint this cityscape without its illumination across the sky. In the distant background we have the city of Zhuhai in mainland China. 20 Macau Hoje A procura duma vista conhecida pelos Macaenses resultou na escolha desta paisagem aérea da Torre de Macau, construida pelo patrão dos Casinos, o Comendador Stanley Ho. Nesta vista aérea temos os dois lagos construídos pelos Portugueses em frente da Praia Grande, com Avenida República à esquerda, abaixo da Capela da Nossa Senhora da Penha, é a Residência do Cônsul Geral estabelecida no antigo Hotel Bela Vista. A península segue ao norte com arranha-céus e novos casinos situados em frente ao Monte da Guia, onde se encontra o primeiro farol construído no Extremo Oriente pelos Portugueses. Não é possível pintar esta vista sem pintar a sua luz a atravessar o céu. Ao longe avista-se a cidade de Zhuhai na China. 二十 今日澳門 我想，沒有人會認不出，這幅從何鴻燊興建之澳門旅遊塔向下俯視的鳥瞰圖，所畫的是澳門吧。 昔日海灣，今均作人工湖：左為西灣湖、右為南灣湖。西灣湖畔民國大馬路後，主教山上，依舊為西望洋聖堂及主教府；山腳之峰景酒店現已為葡萄牙駐澳門總領事官邸。 松山腳下紛紛建起人煙稠密的賭場。由我葡萄牙先祖所建之松山燈塔則百年如一，屹立不倒，照耀大海。且看後方的珠海市，正伺機而動，悄悄崛起。
21 Portage to Main Other than the high risers at Portage and Main, and replacement of Eaton’s Department Store by the city’s Hockey Arena, this is the unchanging heart of Downtown Winnipeg since World War II, with its constant 600,000 population. Founded in 1874, Winnipeg sits at the crossroads of Canada where both, the CN and CP Railways have their hubs in the very heart of the continent. 21 Avenida Portage a Main Para além dos Arranha-Céus em Portage e em Main, e a substituição dos Armazéns Eaton por arena para prática do hóquei no gelo temos o imutável coração da cidade desde a Segunda Guerra Mundial, com os seus seiscentos mil habitantes. Fundada em 1874, a cidade de Winnipeg situa-se no centro do Canadá onde ambos os caminhos de ferro, CN e CP têm as suas estações. 二十一 砵地治至緬街 砵地治至緬街，高樓大廈林立。昔日之伊頓百貨公司，今日已成為市中心冰球坊。二次大戰伊始，此處已為溫尼伯之心臟，歷久不衰。市內人口維持在六十萬之數。 溫尼伯建市於一八七四年，位處國家心臟地帶。加拿大國家鐵路及加拿大太平洋鐵路均紮根於此。
22 Portage and Memorial From Portage Avenue along Memorial Boulevard to the Provincial Legislative Building with the Golden Boy, we have the Hudson’s Bay Store and its Parkade, followed by the Winnipeg Auditorium on the east side. On the west side, bathed by the morning sunshine against the prairie sky, we have my architectural contribution to the city, built in 1968, completed and inaugurated in 1971 by H.R.H. Princess Margaret, the Winnipeg Art Gallery. 22 Portage e Rua Monumental Da Avenida Portage, ao longo da Rua Monumental, até ao edifício do Corpo Legislativo do Governo Provincial com o seu Rapaz de Ouro, temos o armazém da baía Hudson, seguido do auditório da cidade a este. A oeste, banhada pelo sol do amanhecer temos a minha contribuição arquitectónica para a cidade, construída entre 1968 e 1971, e inaugurada por SAR Princesa Margaret, a Galeria das Belas Artes de Winnipeg. 二十二 砵地治與民摩利亞路 從砵地治放眼望去，民摩利亞路，緬省政府大樓上的金童子，閃耀奪目。於其東面，即畫中偏左，為克遜卑百貨公司及其多層停車場。溫尼伯音樂廳位於更東方。 回望西面，便見溫尼伯美術館沐浴於晨光之中。該館為一設計比賽冠軍，若稱之為我對當地建築藝術之貢獻，亦絕不為過。一九六八年動工，一九七一年完工並由英國皇室瑪嘉烈公主主禮開幕。
GUSTAVO DA ROZA Gustavo da Roza was born in Hong Kong of Portuguese parents, educated in Macau and Hong Kong, and obtained his Bachelor of Architecture degree with First Class Honours from the University of Hong Kong. After graduation, he worked for Prof. Gordon Brown’s practice and taught architecture at the University of Hong Kong till his invitation to teach at the University of California in Berkeley. In 1960 he migrated to teach at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada and served as Head of the school from 1983. He maintained his architectural practice as Da Roza Architects since 1962, and after his retirement from the University of Manitoba in 1990, continued his international practice from his Vancouver and Hong Kong offices. Prof. da Roza has been active in the community with numerous ethnic groups across Canada. In 1970 he was appointed by the Government of Portugal and served as Consul of Portugal in Winnipeg, participated as an active member of the Consular Corps and its Vice Dean from 1982 to 1988. In 1973, Prof. da Roza was appointed an Academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He served in the Canadian Housing Design Council from 1973 and its national Chairman from 1975 to 1977. Prof. da Roza was decorated in 1985 by the President of Portugal as a Comendador of the Order of Prince Henry for his architecture and services to the community. In 1988 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada by the Governor General of Canada for distinction in the architec- tural profession and for contributions to Canada and humanity at large. In 2009 the Catholic University of Portugal and inter-University Institute of Macau conferred the degree Doctor of Arts Honoris Causa on Comendador Gustavo da Roza, renowned architect whose “work and vision influenced Canadian Architecture in the twentieth century”. Since 2003 Comendador da Roza has resumed his water colour painting completing over twenty limited edition prints for this publication “Cities and Places”. GUSTAVO DA ROZA Gustavo da Roza nasceu em Hong Kong filho de pais portugueses, educado em Macau e Hong Kong, concluiu o Bacharelato de Arquitectura na Universidade de Hong Kong com distinção. Após a sua formação, trabalhou para a firma do Prof. Gordon Brown e leccionou na Universidade de Hong Kong até ao convite para ensinar na Universidade de California em Berkeley. Imigrou para o Canadá em 1960 para ensinar na Universidade de Manitoba em Winnipeg onde serviu como Director da Escola de Arquitectura desde 1983. Em acumulação com o seu trabalho académico, abriu uma empresa de arquitectura, Da Roza Architects, desde 1962 e depois da sua reforma da universidade, estabeleceu residencia em Vancouver continua; à trabalhar em arquitectura com gabinetes em Vancouver e Hong Kong. Prof. da Roza foi activo em assuntos comunitários com numerosos grupos étnicos. Em 1970 foi nomeado pelo governo português Consul de Portugal em Winniipeg e serviu como membro do Corpo Consular de Winnipeg e com cargo de Vice-Decano de 1982 a 1988. Em 1973 foi eleito Académico da Academia Real das Belas Artes do Canadá, e Companheiro do Instituto Real de Arquitectura do Canadá. Serviu como Membro, em 1973, do Canadian Housing Design Council e seu Presidente de 1975 a 1977. Prof. Gustavo da Roza foi condecorado pelo Presidente da República Portuguesa com a Comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique em 1985. Em 1988 Prof. da Roza foi condecorado pelo Governador Geral do Canadá como Oficial da Ordem do Canadá por distinção em arquitectura e serviços à comunidade. A Universidade Católica de Portugal e o Instituto Inter-Universitário de Macau conferiram o grau de Doutor de Artes Honoris Causa em 2009 ao Comendador Gustavo da Roza, arquitecto “conhecido pelas suas obras e visões que influenciaram a arquitectura Canadiana no século vinte”. Desde 2003 o Comendador da Roza continua a pintar aguarelas, completando mais de vinte para esta publicação “Cidades e Lugares”. 羅嘉 出生於香港，雙親皆為葡萄牙裔。先後負笈於澳門及香港。為香港大學建築系第一屆一級榮譽畢業生。後受聘於戈登布朗教授之建築師事務所，並任教於香港大學。後應加州大學柏克萊分校之請於其任教。一九六零年轉教加拿大緬省大學，一九八三年升為建築系院長，一九九零年榮休。另自一九六二年起設羅嘉建築師事務所，事務所設於溫哥華及香港。 一九七三年獲頒加拿大皇家建築學院院士、加拿大皇家藝術學院院士。另自一九七三年起任加拿大房屋設計委員會委員，並於一九七五至七七年出任委員會之全國主席。 其對建築學、社會乃至人文學之貢獻均屬無庸置疑。一九八五年獲葡萄牙總統頒授亨利王子勳章。一九八八年獲加拿大總督頒授加拿大軍官勳章。 羅嘉熱心服務社區，一九七零年獲委任為葡萄牙駐溫尼伯名譽領事，一九八二至八八年出任領事團副主席。 二零零九年獲葡萄牙公教大學與現稱聖若瑟大學之澳門高等校際學院頒授榮譽文學博士二零零三年重拾畫筆，本書《城市與地方》合共收錄其水彩畫二十餘幅。
