PerfaceThe name of this book, “Her Home, His Home”,is simple but it reveals a lot of messages. First of all, there is a female and a male that two authors write the book. Secondly, there are his home and her home. Are they the same home? Are they old or new? A new realization will dawn on you.I am grateful to Mr. Han Mu, who accepted my invitation of this collaboration with pleasure when I proposed this idea. We have an age difference of almost half a century. I am such a learner of poetry when compared to him; however, we have a lot in common. First of all, we are both from Macau. Han Mu was born in Macau. He graduated in Master of Arts (Literature Studies) from the University of Macau, where I finished my bachelor degree. Secondly, we are both living in Vancouver currently. Thirdly, both of us are fond of new poetry and photography. Our collaboration is an interesting experience and we expect surprises. Moreover, I have invited the theatre director Jenny, Mok Sin Teng, a great friend from the university, to translate this book into English. Her language ability and cultural background will surely give a lot of positive impact to this book. The book consists of forty-two photos and forty-two new poems where half of them are categorized into the Macau part and half into the Canada part. I took all the photos and shared the writing with Han Mu. These photos and poems are unique on their own, but they bring out the best of each other when they are blended in unity.Photography was a selective course when I studied Journalism and Public Communications at the University of Macau. Since then, I fell in love with it and bought my first camera. The camera was my
春companion in my Macau years. After graduation, I moved to Vancouver from Macau. However, I always remembered those beautiful days at the university. Therefore, I made a photo book named Macau Scenery to ease my nostalgia. I never thought I could publish them years later. My camera is just a half manual digital camera, and I was not very good at post-production for photos. From a technical point of view, the photos are immature works. However, I hope that people can pay more attention to their content and points of view, which I believe those are the most unique quality of the photos. I originated in Guangdong Jiangmen. Although it is just two hours away from Macau, the blending of cultures in Macau gave me a total different experience. I began shooting the coast at different times of the day, passengers on the street, crowded residences, exotic tiles and even the most ordinary things. I learned how to observe when I was in Macau and I also began writing poems. Macau is a small town, but it has given me a lot of inspiration in literature and photography. Photos in the Macau part focus mainly on people and objects. There are philosophical thoughts behind them. For example, The Calendar on the Water Pipe is about my thoughts on the mobility of time and water; there are also thoughts on social issues, such as The Cat in the Slum; even some experimental photos, such as The Cat that Vanishes in the Grass, The Scar of the Night. I like the sea, so you can easily spot them in the photos. Although Macau is known as a gambling city, you will be not able to find any of my photos of this content, because I want to present its diversity instead. After I moved to Vancouver, I changed my digital camera into a manual one, and as well further studied photography. I believe I have better techniques than I had in Macau. The photos I shot in Vancouver City, Metro Vancouver and the towns and cities around it
當時寫compose “Vancouver” under my camera. These arebeautiful places with four distinct seasons. I always told my friends, “We feel livelihood in China. InCanada, we feel life.” There is no good or bad. Canadais a big piece of land with little people on it. People’sentertainments are mainly about the nature. They appreciate blossoms in spring, sea in summer, leaves in autumn and snow in winter. As a result, photos in Canada focus on nature and landscapes. I captured a lot of seasonal sceneries and all sorts of plants, especially flowers. Among all flowers, my favorite is Kiku-zakura. There are over fifty species of cherry blossoms in Vancouver. Kiku-zakura mentioned in this book is a kind of cherry blossom that looks like chrysanthemum. One flower has over a hundred petals and the same flower blossoms twice. Flowers have nothing to do with human deeds. Chinese people should learn from Japanese people’s preservation of their culture. Moreover, I spent a month “lurking” in the China townof Vancouver, aiming to capture different kinds of characters. There you can always capture Vancouver with a different impression. Both Han Mu and I love writing short new poems. He likes my photos and chose the ones he found inspiring to work on. We are a combination of masculinity and femininity. He is good at observing the world with rationality and depicting it straightly. I advocate romance and sensations. I write about love, personal growth and life. My writings depict the internal journey of a simple and pure girl.I started writing poems in university and I was not majored in literature. I do not write with beautiful phrases nor quote the classics. Writing with my observation in life and a truthful heart, I do not think too much about forms and wordings when I write. My pen follows my thoughts and I focus on the themes and
emotions. I acknowledge the importance of beautiful phrases, but I put more emphasis on the truthfulness. I believe a poem has to touch the poet’s heart before ittouches its audience. This is my principle of writing poems. Some of my poems in this book came from my first published collection Youth Hidden in Time and Space. The photos inspire most of them and I believe putting the original poems and photos together is the best choice. The rest of my work came from the thoughts and reflections of my life history. I believe the combination will give an interesting and special impact.Han Mu is a well-known senior poet in Macau, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and Vancouver. I am honored to be able to work with him. In fact, he is a very warm person who likes to support junior writers and poets. He is my mentor in literation. He told me to keep discovering my strengths and looking for my uniqueness among the others. In literature, one starts to be special and independent only when one knows his/her uniqueness, then can one become a real poet and artist. I will always keep this in mind.
Perface Poetry and Photography seem to find themselves congenial to each other. These two years, my poems always find their photographers and my photos always find their poets. It started with my photographer friend in Vancouver, Sand Wan. He was publishing a twenty-pieces photo collection about Finn Slough the historic fishing village in Richmond, B. C. He knew I have been writing a lot about the village and invited me to provide twenty poems to put in his book. We created our work separately in different times. My poems are not written for his photos, nor his photos were taken for my poems. We just worked mutually on the same theme. Then it came to my poet friend Du Du from Eastern Canada. She saw my work that was selected into the collection of “Photography on Journalism andWeather” and found it interesting to write poems formy photos. She wrote two hundred poems. In fact, those photos were just my daily life snap shots and I did not take it from a photographer’s point of view. The purpose of those photos was to record life so that they could recall my memories when I was writing my poems, just like painters’ sketches. Their sketches arethe preparation of their paintings. I am grateful that Du Du wrote poems for these photo sketches, so that there can be a chance for them to be published and stay forever.I love art and writing new poems. For several decades, I have always found myself inspired by art works, exhibitions, paintings, sculptures, photography, music, dance, theatre, etc.
Photos inspired my poems in two different situations. The first one comes naturally. For example, I was inspired to write a set of poems named The Third eye of Ansel Adams after I saw Ansel Adams’photography exhibition. After I saw Chang Chi Seng’sexhibition, I write another set of poems Country Sketches. My inspiration to write Illustration and Silence came from the photography exhibition Guei Hou by Sand Wan. Works from other photographers such as Lang Jingshan, Li Qun Li, etc also inspired my poems. The second one comes f rom requests by publication to blend photography works with new poems. The Young Companion is China’s first large-scale comprehensive photography pictorial, which published its first issue in 1926 in Shanghai andhave had a big impact in the country. It was my first magazine in childhood in the 30’s and I borrowed itfrom my classmate. In that copy I remembered reading the article about the death of the great master Gao Qifeng, seeing his paintings and also some photos of a nude female model. The Young Companion stopped its publications several times and in 1984 it resumedpublication again in Hong Kong. I was fortunate to have the opportunity given to me by the editor Gu Jian who let me chose photos that I found inspiration to write new poems for. I remembered writing Seven Steps in the Lotus Pond for the lotus flowers of Tang Kwan Yue the famous Hong Kong photographer, Mirage for Chen Ji’s eerie Hong Kong skyline, We are the SecondGeneration of Pan Gu for Lin Sun-xing’s terraced fields,Machapuchare of Nepal for Chan Chok-ki’s photo.Different from the situations mentioned above, this book is a collaboration with my poet friend Emily Yip who loves photography and writing new poems. She made the photo book Macau Scenery when she
而graduated in the University of Macau. The work is about Macau from her point of view and is not a publication. I saw the work by coincidence and found some photos inspiring for writing. Emily has continued her photography by capturing Vancouver sceneries after she moved here. This spring, she proposed the idea of publishing this book together. I agreed. She generously let me choose from all of her photos and she took the rest. I thought it was not very fair for her as I took all the good photos. However, out of my expectation, photos I picked were not what she wanted anyway. I understand we have different opinions on arts and poems, as well as different tastes. It is especially interesting because readers can see different styles of photo poem match. This publication consists of forty-two photos, half taken in Macau and half in Vancouver. Initially, we each planned to write twenty-one poems, but I can only match poems with eighteen photos. Maybe I just have a slow wit. I respect the flow of inspiration when writing poems. If I do not feel the words, I cannot push myself to write just for the sake of making up the numbers, so I decided to leave it the way it was.Now when I think about it, I think the flow of inspiration comes from two places, nature and society. Some writers, especially novel writers are more interested in the realities of society and they even know them very well. However, they are not interested or even ignorant about nature. When compared to writers, poets are often more passionate about nature and arts. Out of all genres of literature, poetry has the most intimate relationship with arts and nature.Emi ly and I a re bo th poem wr i t e r s and photographers who are passionate about nature and arts. Sky clearing up after snow, rainbow appearing in
最近,我把這點意思寫成了《畫意與詩情》一詩,首兩節說:“ 湖光山色 紅花翠鳥 / 也許只是愉悅感官的 / 膚淺的畫意 / / the sky, foggy nights, starry nights, blossoming flowers, falling leaves, flying birds, humming insects are all touching elements for us. Therefore, she has poetry in her photos and sceneries in her poems. By the end, imagery is a very important factor in poetry.I always think there is a very clear line between arts and literature. Artists may not understand literature and writers may not understand arts. However, poetry is the kind of literature which is closest to arts and most artistic. Emily and I share the same passion on photography, painting, music, and we both love writing new poems. We are both wanderers between arts and literature with double nationalities. When Emily and I were matching photos with the poems, we had different opinions. She thought we should focus on photos that carried the image of beauty, and instead, images such as worn-down slum and lonely cemetery do not need to be matched with poems. In my opinion, although images of people from the lower society and unpleasant places are not beautiful images, there is poetry in them. Emily was born in the 80’sand me in the 30’s. I experienced half a century morethan she does, so I have more profound thoughts on the realities of society. Showing either only the bright or the dark side does not give a complete picture. By the end of the day, poetry is not entertainment, commercial products nor propaganda materials, but literature. In the process of matching poems with photos, I had a new realization: some photos had beautiful image but it was difficult to match a poem to it; some did not carry beautiful images but were very poetic. This is another proof of the clear line between arts and literature. But if a photo is both beautiful and poetic, it is certainly a very precious one, like a woman who embodies both beauty and intelligence.
Sometimes I have special feelings towards some images, such as a piece of wood with a nail on it, a piece of leaf, fallen blossoms, two weak cats, a dead butterfly body, a worn-down wall, a boat lying on its side, a fragile bud in the winter. They feel poetic but not photogenic to me. Yet, some images are scenic but I do not feel poetry in them.Recently I wrote a poem on this opinion, named Scenic and Poetic. In the poem, I said, “ Lakes andmountains, red blossoms and green birds/ it may satisfy our sensations/ rich in pictorial splendor but of no depth/ the rich feasting and spreeing, the poor dies on the road side/ Ugly scene, unattainable/ yet profound and poetic.”It seems I try to put poetry above photography and literature above arts. In fact, they are just different medium. Good poems should carry strong imagery; good photographs should be profound and poetic. Both can be extremely impressive. The difference is: the former is louder and more straightforward, while the latter is more complicated and complicated. I am very thankful to Emily, who gives me this opportunity to reflect on the similarities and differences between photography and poetry, and the relationship between being pictorial splendid and poetic.November 2016, Richmond, Canada.
