  • acao Artists CollectionPrefaceThe arts can elevate people’s capacity to observe, to comprehend and to express themselves, not only is one of the ways to resolve problems, but also can give people hope and courage so that their talents and wisdom can be fully demonstrated and exalted. More importantly, the arts are connected with the deepest core of human nature by expressing emotions and demon-strating wisdom.A city also needs some form of wisdom. Over nearly 30 years, art creations in Macao have had accumulated not a few attainments. The skills of the fine painters emerged in the mid-1980s have become more matured after nearly 30 years of exploration. They have now become the pillar of the arts community of Macao and are leading the trend of our times. On the other hand, as a result of access to higher education becoming more open, local art creations are also becoming more profes-sional and diversified. New artists bring forth new artistic thinking, creative skills, visual elements and ways of appreciation. Owing to the lack of a systematic scheme of promotion, the overall image of artists in Macao is, however, yet to be sufficiently distinctive, and their contributions to the urban cultural and artistic development are yet to be sufficiently affirmed and promot-ed. The publication of this Collection aims to fill these gaps, with hopes to bring, through some ten years of effort, the image of the artists of Macao, who have contrib-uted so quietly, to the life.During the course of art creations, Macao artists who engage in creations in Chinese calligraphy and painting find themselves quite hard to tear away from the tradition. They enthusiastically learn and study traditional arts of the nation, enhancing training in pen and ink, perfecting their modelling abilities, and fully elevating their artistic accomplishments and skills. From calligraphy to painting, and from sculpture to photography, their works have fully integrated into the national spirit of culture. In the meantime, they are good at absorbing the advantages of the arts abroad with great tolerance, fusing the Chinese and the West together. Artists who engage in Western media and materials demon-strate to people their sincerity and peculiar concepts, from concrete image to impres-sions, and from impressions to modern abstractness. From sketches to water-paint-ing, oil-painting, acrylic arts, block print, mixed media, photography, all of these works demonstrate the passion form light and shadow. It leaves without denial that the representa-tives of these artists stand out from their fellows only after arduous practices. They enter the arts community of Macao and gradually form their own distinctive styles. Through their works of great artistic accomplishment, they ignite the interests of the spectators. Their artistic achieve-ments come from their passion for the land where they grow up, as well as from their passion for the small yet beautiful, an internationalising Macao, and her simple and friendly people. They use their paint-brushes to draw the thoughts of the people. They use their artistic accomplishment to add colours to this city, to recall the past, to depict the present, and to offer for the future.Publication and exhibition are important means to promote artistic creations and to effectively remember the past and depict the present. While artists included in this Macao Artists Collection explore innova-tively based on the artistic experience of the forerunners and exalting their own artistic personalities, they also respect the aesthetic taste of the population at large, paying attention to the style and quality of their works. They have achievements. They have faith. And they are aware that the aesthetic taste of the works can in turn play a relevant role in elevating the cultur-al accomplishment of the public. Needless to say, these artists are only part of a wider community who are cultivating with great efforts on the soils of Macao. There remain many more artists with artistic gifts, talents, personal style and characters to be discovered and recommended. This requires us to work together to achieve this, so that a fuller picture of the arts of Macao can be demonstrated.Social progress cannot neglect cultural construction. A prosperous economy and a prosperous culture are some of the impor-tant features of a modernised country or territory. The duties succeeded and exalted by the arts of Macao are now shouldered upon those full of innovative ideas. It is commonly acknowledged that those with artistic accomplishment possess a wider tolerance, a fuller life experience and humanistic accomplishment, a more energetic and charming personality, and a more aggressive innovative spirit. We sincerely hope that the publication of this Collection can inject vitality to the creative atmosphere of the arts in Macao, and that the levels of artistic creations at present can be reviewed, the artistic education deepened, the image as a cultural city modelled, the cultural personality of this city exalted, and to play a positive role in calling the population at large to pay attention and support our cultural and creative industries. This serves as the preface.Wu ZhiliangPresident of the Board of Directors The Macao FoundationM
  • When Kuok Keng Man invited me to write a preface for his new photographic album, he said that he titled this book as “Taking a break”, which is a verbal phrase and he chose the pictures for this album by his feelings. He also mentioned that this exhibition can only be a milestone of his photographer’s journey, but it cannot be counted as a sum up of his photographic life. He likes to exhibit his pic-tures in free compilation to keep his audienc-es interested every time they open a new page in the album, like listening to a randomly assorted music album. After reading the draft of his new album, I had the same feeling as he expected his audi-ences to have for his works. This album col-lected his works taken in many countries and some of them showed the changes of Macao as recorded by a Macao citizen. Moreover, his capturing of the Greater China, especially her people in their split second brilliance, all these give great surprise and happiness to his audience. I’ve known Kuok for some thirty years. When I visited Macao back in 1985 with the rep-resentatives of Chinese photographers we were warmly treated by our friends in Ma-cao. Kuok was in his prime and a dedicated photographer. When Macao administration was returned to China in 1999, I had anoth-er chance to work with Kuok, together with photographers from Mainland China, Macao and Hong Kong, to capture this historical event in our “48 hour photographic project”. Again, on the 10 anniversary of this event, while Kuok was President of PSM, we had an-other chance to work together to spend one year photographing the changes of Macao and shared our record with the Macao com-munity in exhibitions. On top of the aforesaid activities, Kuok, despite his busy duties as vice school master, was able to join us in our Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao photographic excur-sion. During the trip, we visited dozens of cities, from metropolitan Shanghai to Jinmen Island of Taiwan. Our footprints covered half of Greater China. Kuok impresses me with his sincerity and integrity. He is perhaps not a person not very skilled in expressing himself in words but certainly very skilled in expressing his feel-ings in his photographic works. He expresses his inner self and the world more vividly in pictures captured through his lenses. In his own words: “Photography helps me see a more beautiful world, think more delicately and make more friends.”We wish him more happiness in his onward photographic career! 香港中國旅遊出版社副社長兼總編輯王苗2013年8月K U O K K E N G M A NS T I L L

Ways to release stress differ from person to person and building up hobbies is one of them. Sneaking out from our busy life to take up some interesting activities gives a fresh breeze to our life as well as a good way for relaxation. I have been fascinated by photography for a few dec-ades and have gained a lot from it. Photography helps me to see the world in a more beautiful way, to think in a more delicate manner and to make more friends. I love photography. I enjoy the pleas-ure it gives me, and through sharing my works I hope to share with my audiences the same joy. I choose to do this sharing in a cocktail par-ty style and hope my audiences would also like it. Kuok Keng ManK U O K K E N G M A N

Back to 80,s, during the summer school, I brought some snacks and went to Cheoc Van Beach to enjoy sun tanning. Then, I went to Ping An Cinema, which closed many years ago. Actually, I did not go there for watching movies but for enjoying the air conditioning. Life is simple, and I miss it.Our little city, Macao, has been developing rapidly, and many of our collective memories have gone, such as the so called “Chang Ming Bridge”(Long-life Bridge), The Bronze Horse Plaza, Estrada do Istmo (Cotai Strip), Campo dos operários da Associação Geral dos Op-erários de Macao (Workers’ Playground), Bullfighting and cross-harbor swimming. I have preserved those memories in color negative films; however, most of their colors faded out as time went by. I have to change all those old pictures into black and white in order to present the whole collection with a uniform color tone. Hope these pictures bring back to you of some of our collective memories.

There, I needed to go on a bus for 2 days from Kunming to Dali, Lijiang and Zhongdian. When our bus drove through mountain after mountain, we drove through clouds and sometimes above them. Lying on the grass, I saw rainbow after rainbow. It was most impressing and memorable. Yunnan is a gorgeous place for creative photography. The weather is fine and there are numerous minority groups. It’s an ideal place for landscape and culture capturing.

The encounter with Tibet made me understand that man need not necessarily conquer nature. It might be regretful not to reach the Mount Everest, but reaching the Everest in our heart might bring a similar satisfaction, though in a lesser scale.

Realistic – AbstractPhotography is destined to entangle with the art of painting ever since its invention. Peo-ple cannot free themselves from the subjective understanding of the world through paint-ing or photography. Though many photographers tried to use an objective way to capture this world as spectators, they are still limited by their understanding of this world. Neither “documentation or conceptual photography” nor “realistic or abstract photography” can free us from our subjectivity. We tried our best to shake off preconceived ideas and restric-tions but could never escape from our desires eventually.
