477476macau:pastandpresentmigration.issues,sourcesandmethodsoftheirinternaldynamicsandtheinteractionbetweenthemcausedbymigrations.Itisattheintersectionofthesetwoperspectives,diachronicandsynchronic,thatasystemicapproachisdrawn,allowingtheintegra-tionofaspecificmigratoryflowinitsregionalcontextsandintheinternationalmigratorymovements,butalsointhecomplexityofthemigratorywebsurroundingit.Thisspace-timedimensionclearlydem-onstrateshowaninternationalmigratorymovementbecomesincreas-inglycomplex,abandoninganinitialphasecharacterisedbyasimpleorigin-destinationrelationship,toenterintoanewphasewhere“morecomplexstructuresthatcorrespondtorealtransnationalmigrationarchipelagos”arebuilt(Malheiros,2001,p.20).Adoptingthispointofview,awell-groundedunderstandingoftherolethatcanbere-servedfortheMacanesecommunityinanearormoredistantfuture,andwhichisthetopicofreflectiontoday,willonlybepossibleifitintegratesthespatial-temporalstudyofthediaspora,buildingfromresearchconductedonconcretemigrationmovements,asisthecaseofthemigrationflowswewereabletostudybetweenMacau,HongKongandShanghai.Finally,therelationaldimensionofferedtheperspectivethattheMacanesediasporaprocess,includingmigrationbetweenthesethreecities,wasbasedontheconstructionofsocial-familialnetworks,whichgivebodyandshapetotheMacaneseemigrationintheterritoryoforiginanddestination.StillinMacau,itwaswithinthefamiliesthattheknowledgeofculturalpracticeswasbuiltupandthat,onceinasituationofemigration,constitutedaresourcethatnotonlyenabledthedecisiontoleave,butfacilitatedintegrationintothehostsociety.Itwasalsothroughthesocial-familialnetworksthataMacanesecom-munityoftransnationalfeatureswasorganisedandkeptalive:contactswereestablishedbetweenthedifferentterritorieswheremigrant,andlivedbetweenthemandMacau,andtheycontinuedfordecadesthankstofamilynetworkswovenfromthemigratoryroutesthataccompaniedtheirdiffusionthroughouttheworld.Itisalsoimportanttohighlightthatthehouseholdswereusedasthesettingforcontactswithothermigratorycommunitiesinthehostsocieties.ThiswasvisibleinHongKongand,aboveall,inShanghaiduetothehistoryofforeignconces-sionsestablishedthere.Thismeansthatthestudyoftheintegrationprocessesindifferenthostsocietiesfits within thisrelationaldimen-alfredogomesdiassion,thoughtheymaymanifestthemselvesdifferentlydependingonthecharacteristicsofthehostterritoriesaswellasthesocio-economiccharacteristicsofthemigrantgroupsthatwerespreadthroughthevariousMacanesemigrationflows.FromConceptstoInterdisciplinarityThedevelopmentofthesethreedimensionsofanalysisontheMaca-nesediasporainvolvedtheconstructionofananalyticalframework,basedontwokeyconcepts,namely,diasporaandsocialcapital:thefirstiskeytothedevelopmentofthemacro-analysis,thesecondisatthecentreofthemicro-analysis.Thisanalyticalmodelmadeitpossibletoidentifytheinter-relation-shipsthatarefoundbetweenthecharacteristicsofaparticularmigra-toryflowandthestructuralcontextinwhichitoccurs,beitinthesocietyoforiginorinthehostsociety.Whileononehand,theexplana-toryfactorsthatemergefromstudyingthesocio-demographiccharac-teristicsofthemigratoryflowwereconsidered,ontheotherhandthesefactorsonlyassumetheirfullcausalmeaningwhenplacedinabroaderanalyticalframework.Neitherthecontrolofthestructuresovertheactorsinvolvedinthemigrationphenomenon,northeagents,inthem-selves,areacknowledgedassufficientexplanatoryvariablesforacom-prehensiveanddeepunderstandingofthissamephenomenon.DiasporaSocialcapitalCulturalcapitalCultureIntegrationAnalyticaldimensionsEthnicidenditySHANGHAIMIGRATORYFLOWMACAUMacro-analysisMicro-analysisSOCIALNETWORKSFig.1–Conceptualframework
