OpeningAddressbyMr.EdmundHoTheChiefExecutiveoftheMacaoSpecialAdministrativeRegionTheP.R.ChinaHonorableanddistinguishedguests,ladiesandgentlemen,Q1MACAUG.E.OnbehalfoftheGovernmentoftheMacaoSpecialAdministrativeRegionofthePeople'sRepublicofChina,itismygreatpleasuretoexpressourwelcomeandgratitudetoyouforyourpresenceinMacao.Forthepastfewdecades,manydevelopedanddevelopingcountrieshaveexperiencedrapideconomicgrowthandconsequentlyahigherGDPpercapita.However,whenweembracethebenefitsderivedfromsuchgrowth,wemustnotbecomenegligentofthefar-reachingnegativeimpactofpopulationexplosion,rapidurbanizationandchangeofthehumanconsumptionpatternonourenvironmentandecosystems.Together,theyhaveresultedinglobalenvironmentalproblemssuchasthedepletionoftheozonelayer,drasticclimatechanges,thegreenhouseeffect,desertification,anacceleratedconsumptionofnaturalresourcesandenvironmentalpollutions.Itiscrucialforustostriveforaharmonybetweentheenvironment,societyandeconomy,orinotherwords,asustainabledevelopment.Thedevelopmentthatweaimtomeettheneedsofthepresentwithoutcompromisingtheabilityoffuturegenerationstomeettheirownneeds.Ourgovernmentplacesgreatvalueontheconceptofsustainabledevelopment.Whileformulatingeconomic,socialandeducationpolicies,wepaygreatattentiontotheimportanceofachievingabalancebetweentheenvironment,societyandeconomyinaccordancewiththerealityofMacao.Aspeopleallovertheworldarebecomingmoreandmoreconsciousofsustainabledevelopment,newbusinessopportunitieshaveemergedfromenterprises.Throughproductdesign,innovation,materialsubstitution,closed-loopprocesses,redirectionofcustomerneedsandenvironmentalmanagement,enterprisesnotonlycanassumetheirsocialresponsibilitiestoprotectourenvironmentbutalsocanstrengthentheircompetitivenessintheglobalmarket.LocatedinthePearlRiverDelta,oneofthemostdynamicregionsinSouthChina,MacaobecameaSpecialAdministrativeRegionofthePeople'sRepublicofChinaonDecember20,1999and,underthepolicyof"Onecountry,twosystems",itenjoysahighdegreeofautonomyexceptindefenseandforeignaffairs.Furthermore,Macaohasestablishedlong-standingtieswiththeEuropeanUnionandcountriesoftheLatinheritage.Therefore,Macaohasbeenendowedwithauniquestrategicpositioninservingasagatewayforenterprises,especiallysmallandr13
