INTRODUÇÃOComoseinicioueaprofundouomeucontactocomomundoestimulantedosPostaisAntigos?Porqueéqueopteipormededicar,dentrodessaáreadocoleccionismo,àtemáticadoantigoUltramarPortuguês?Porquêiniciaragoraumprojectoambicioso,comoéodeeditardiversosálbunsdepostaisantigossoboconceitogenéricodeMemóriaPortuguesadeÁfricaedoOriente?E,finalmente,porquêcomeçarporMacau?ÉestapequenasériedequestõespréviasquetentareiesclarecernapresenteIntrodução.UMPOSTALDEHÁ25ANOS...FoiatravésdeumpostalilustradodeLuanda,mostrandoumaperspectivanocturnadaentãomodernaAvenidadosCombatentesdaGrandeGuerra,quefizsaberaosmeusPaisquetinhachegadopelaprimeiravezaAngola,em14deMarçode1970.EOUTRODEHÁ75ANOSCinquentaanosantes,em8deJaneirode1920,umajovemprofessoradoensinoprimário,aochegaraoladoopostodacostaafricana,escreveraaoseuPai,naIlhadaMadeira,umpostalcombreveslinhasemqueasseguravatersidoboaaviagemeóptimasasprimeirasimpressõessobreacidadedaBeira.Essajovemprofessoramadeirenseque,noslongínquosanosvinte,seiniciavaprofissionalmentenadocênciaemterritóriodaCompanhiadeMoçambique,eraaminhaAvóMaterna,AliceCarmo.8INTRODUCAORuaConselheiroCaslillo-BeiraORIGENSDEUMACOLECÇÃOEstesdoispostaisqueafectuosamenteguardonaminha"secçãodereservados"-osegundodosquaismefoidado,hápoucomaisdedoisanosemMacau,pelaminhaprimaMariaJoão,queoreceberaaindaemMoçambiquedasmãosdanossaqueridaAvó-senãoforam,naturalmente,opontodepartidadeumacolecçãoqueultrapassajáos6000exemplares,constituemaindaassuasmaisrelevantesevaliosasreferências.Seexcluiralgumasdezenasdepostaisilustradosqueadquiriemdiversasviagensaosantigosterritóriosultramarinos,esobretudonasminhascolocaçõesprofissionaisemMalanjeeCarmonanosprimórdiosdosanossetenta,possoconsiderarcomopontodepartidadeumarecolhasistemáticaoVerãode1992,imediatamenteapósoregressodeumavisitaaMacau_.Apercebi-me-erapidamenteoconfirmeicompessoasaltamentecredenciadasnestasmatérias-queerammuitoescassasasfontesiconográficassobreosterritóriosdeÁfricaedoOrientemarcadospelapresençahumanaeculturalportuguesa,designadamenteembibliotecas,arquivoshistóricoseinstituiçõessimilares.NumapesquisasumáriaefectuadanoArquivoHistóricoUltramarino,emJunhode1993,apureiqueapenasdispunhamdecercade700postaisdasantigasprovínciasafricanas-dosquaisescassasdezenasrespeitantesàsdécadasde50,60e70-ecercade170postaisdasantigasprovínciasdoOriente-dosquais130respeitantesunicamenteaTimor,aliáscommuitasrepetições.Todosestespostaisseencontravam,paraalémdomais,deficientementeordenadosesistematizados,podendoserconsultadosemanuseadossobfrágeiscondiçõesdesegurança.
EmAgostodomesmoanopasseialgumastardesnaSecçãodeIconografiadaBibliotecaNacionaldeLisboa,tendochegadoàsseguintesconclusões:-Aísearquivamcercade26000postaisilustrados,amaiorpartedosquaissãoremetidosàBibliotecaNacionalpelosseuseditores,emcumprimentodoregimedodepósitolegal;-Sobreosmesmosforamelaboradosíndicesporassuntos,toponímicoecronológico,oquefacilitaaconsultaqueé,aocontráriodoquesucedecomocitadoArquivoHistóricoUltramarino,feitaemcondiçõesqueimpossibilitamadestruiçãoouextravio;-Respeitantesaosantigosterritóriosultramarinos,existiam1039postaisilustrados,distribuídosdoseguintemodo:CaboVerde-54;Guiné-29;S.ToméePríncipe-49;Angola-498;Moçambique-181;ÍndiaPortuguesa-15;Macau-100;Timor-113Noutrasentidades,desdeacentenáriaSociedadedeGeografiadeLisboaàprestigiadaAcademiaPortuguesadeHistória,dacopiosaBibliotecaMunicipalCentraldeLisboaaoutrasbibliotecaslocais,dasbibliotecasuniversitáriasaoutroscentrosdedocumentação(v.g.afototecadoPalácioFoz),nadamaisexistesobretalassunto.Aníveleditorial,opanoramaéigualmenteodeumdesertoabsoluto.Osautoresdavolumosaobra"PortugalnoPrimeiroQuarteldoSéculoXXdocumentadopeloBilhetePostalIlustrado"(EdiçãodaCâmaraMunicipaldeBragança,1985),publicadanasequênciadalªExposiçãoNacionaldePostaisAntigos,realizadanaquelacidadeem1984,justificaramessaomissãodoseguintemodo:"NãoincluímosaapresentaçãodasIlhasAdjacentesedasex-Colónias,apesardemuitoimportantes,porimperativosdeespaçoepelanecessidadede,noperíodohistóricoabrangido,sefazerumrigorosotratamentodoPortugalContinental"(obracitada,pág.10).ÂMBITODACOLECÇÃOTendosurgidonosserviçospostaisaustríacosem1869,erapidamentedivulgadosportodaaEuropaerestantespaísesdomundo,ospostaisilustrados-queconhecemoseuperíododeouronasprimeirasdécadasdoséculoXX-tornam-seomeiodecomunicaçãovisualporexcelência,numaépocaemqueastiragensdaimprensaescritaeramescassaseatelevisãoeosaudiovisuaisinexistentes.AosignificadoevalordopostalilustradocomofonteprimáriadahistóriacontemporâneaaludiujáoProfOliveiraMarquesnosseguintestermos:"Umadasfontesiconográficasmaisimportantesparaonossoperíodoé,semdúvida,obilhetepostalilustrado.NascidonosfinaisdoséculoXIX,obilhetepostalilustradodifundiu-serapidamentepelomundo,tornando-seumveículoiconográficodetodosostipos,desdeafotografiaaosimplesdesenho.AsuaépocadeapogeucoincidiucomoprimeirodecéniodoséculoXX,emboraacarreiraiconográficadopostaltivessecontinuadoatéaosnossosdias.Nãodispomosainda,paraPortugal,comoparaoutrospaíses,decatálogosnemdeinventáriossistemáticosdessapreciosafonteiconográfica"(inGuiadaHistóriadaPrimeiraRepública,EditorialEstampa,Lisboa,1981,pág.533).Poisbem:operíododelançamentoeexpansãodobilhetepostalilustrado-finaisdoséculoXIXaprimeirostrêsouquatrodecéniosdoséculoXX-coincideprecisamentecomafasedaocupaçãoecolonizaçãoefectivadeÁfricaedeumamaioratençãoeinteressededicadospelosgovernosdamonarquialiberaledasduasprimeirasrepúblicasàscoisasultramarinas.Bastarecordarduasdatas-chave:aSociedadedeGeografiadeLisboafoifundadaem1875eaConferênciaInternacionaldeBerlim,queestabeleceuosnovoscritériosetítulosdesoberaniacolonial,realizou-seem1885.Nãoépossívelvisualizarintegralmenteosespaços,osinstrumentoseaspersonagensdahistóriarecentedePortugalemterrastropicaisdeÁfricaedoOriente,queseconcretizamepotenciamapartirdosfinaisdeoitocentos,semrecorreràsimagensdospostaisilustrados.AcolecçãoquereunisobreospaíseseterritóriosqueformaramoantigoUltramartem,poroutrolado,comolimitetemporaloanode1975,alturaemquesecompletaramosprocessosdeindependênciaconferidospelaterceirarepúblicaportuguesa.SóMacauresta,naturalmente,aindaemabertoatéDezembrode1999.Atravésdosexemplaresqueaintegramépossívelreverascidadeseaspovoações,osedificiospúblicosereligiosos,asplantaçõeseasroças,asactividadescomerciaiseosmercados,asponteseoscaminhosdeferro,ostiposhumanoseoscostumes,eaindarevisitaracontecimentosderelevo,taiscomoasoperaçõesmilitaresnosuldeAngolanoprincípiodesteséculoouaviagemdoINTRODUCTION9

NTRODUCTIONHowwasmyfirstcontactandhowdidlbecome·ncreasinglymoreinterestedwiththeexcitingworldofntiquePostcards?WhydidldecidetodevotemyselftothethemeoftheortugueseOverseasterritorieswithinthatareaofollecting?Whystartnowonanambitiousprojectsuchasublishingsevera!antiquepostcardalbumsunderthegeneralonceptofPortugueseMemoryinAfricaandintheEast?Finally,whystartwithMacau?Thisistheshortseriesofpreliminaryquestionsthatwilltrytoanswerinthisintroduction.POSTCARDFROM25YEARSAGO...ltwasthroughapostcardfromLuandashowingaightviewofthethenmodernAvenidadosCombatentesda'GrandeGuerra,thatlletmyparentsknowthatlhadarrivedinAngola,forthefirstlime,onMarch14th1970....ANDANOTHERONEFROM75YEARSAGOFiftyyearsearlier,onJanuary8th1920,uponreachingtheothersideoftheAfricancoast,ayoungschoolteacherwroteashortpostcardtoherFatherwholivedinMadeira,assuringhimthathervoyagehadbeengoodandgivingherexcellentimpressionsaboutthecityofBeira.ThatyoungteacherfromMadeira,whowasatthebeginningofherprofessionalcareerinteachinginthedistant20'.sonterritoriesownedbyCompanhiadeMoçambique,wasmyGrandmother,AliceCarmo.RuaConselheiroCastillo-BeiraTHEORIGINSOFACOLLECTIONThesetwopostcardswhichlaffectionatelykeepinmy"privatesection"-thesecondoneofwhichwasgiventomealittleoverti,voyearsagoinMacaubymycousinMariaJoão,whohadreceiveditstillinMozambiquef,-omthehandsofourdearGrandmother-althoughnotrepresentingthestartingpointofacollectionthatcontainsover6000items,certainlyarethemostrelevantandvaluablereferences.Withtheexceptionofsevera!dozensofpostcardslacquiredinthecourseofsevera!tripstotheformeroverseasterritories,particularlywhenlwasonprofessionalassignmentsinMalanjeandCarmonaintheearlyseventies,mystartingpointofsystematiccollectingbeganintheSummerof1992,immediatelyafterreturningfromatriptoMacau.lrealized-andsoonconfirmedthisnotionwithexpertsinthefield-thaticonographicsourcesregardingtheAf,-icanandEasternterritoriesmarkedbythePortuguesehumanandculturalpresencewereveryscarce,namelyinlibraries,historicalarchivesandsimilarinstitutions.DuringabriefresearchlmadeintheOverseasHistoricalArchivesinJune1993,lfoundthattherewereonly700postcardsoftheformerPortugueseprovinces-ofwhichonlyafewdozenswerefromthe50'.s,the60'sandthe70's-andapproximately170postcardsfromtheformerEasternprovinces-ofwhich13OconcernedTimoronly,someofwhichwererepeclts.lnaddition,alithosepostcardswereinadequatelyorganizedandarranged,andtheycouldbeviewedandhandledunderpoorsecurityconditions.lnAugustofthatsarneyear,lspentsomeafternoonsinthelconographicSectionoftheNationalLibraryinLisbon,onlytoconcludethefollowing:INTRODUCTION11
-26000postcardsarefiledthere,themajorityofwhicharedeliveredtotheNationallibrarybythepublishers,underthelegalRegistrationscheme;-Theyhadbeenenteredintoindexesaccordingtosubject,toponymyandchronologywhichmakesforeasyconsultationinconditionsthatpreventdestructionandmisplacementoftheitems,unliketheOverseasHistoricalArchive;-Therewere1039postcardsconcerningtheformerterritory,classifiedaccordingtothefollowingheadings:CapeVerde54;Guinea29;S.ToméePríncipe49;Angola498;Mozambique181;PortugueseJndia15;Macau100;Timor113.lnotherinstitutions,fromthecentenaryGeographicalSocietyinLisbontotheprestigiousPortugueseAcademyofHistory,tothevoluminousCentralMunicipalLibraryandotherlocallibraries,universitylibrariesandotherdocumentationcentres(namelythephotoarchivesatPalácioFoz),thereisnothingwhatsoevertobefoundonthissubject.Asregardspublishing,thesituationisalsoanabsolutedesert.Theauthorsoftheextensivework"PortugalintheFirstQuarterofthe20thCentw-yinPostcards"(publishedintheMunicipalityofBragançain1985),followingthefirstexhibitiononantiquepostcardswhichwasheldinthatcityin1984,gavethefollowingexplanationforthatomission:"WedidnotincludethepresentationaboutthePortugueseAtlanticlslandsandtheformerPortuguesecolonieswhich,althoughbeingveryimportant,wasduetolaclcofspaceandtotheneedofdealingaccuratelywithContinentalPortugalwithinthehistoricalperiodinvolved"(quotedwork,page10).SCOPEOFTHECOLLECTIONHavingappearedforthefirsttimeintheAustrianpostalservicesin1869,andhavingbeenquicldydivulgedthroughoutEuropeandtherestoftheworld,postcards-whichhadtheirgoldenageinthefirstdecadesofthe20thcentury-becamethemeansofcommunication"parexcellence"atatimewhencirculationnumberswerereduced,andtelevisionanelaudiovisualmediawerenonexistent.12Ir)1\ProfOliveiraMarqueshasreferredtothemeaningandvalueofpostcardsasaprimarysourceofcontemporaryhistoryinthejollowingwords:"Oneofthemostoutstandingiconographicsourcesofourperiodis,undoubtedly,thepostcard.Havingfirstappearedattheendofthe19thcentury,postcardsrapidlyspreadaliovertheworld,becominganiconographicvehicleofmanytypes,fromphotographytosimpledrawings.Theirtimeofglorycoincidedwiththefirstdecadeofthe20thcentw-y,althoughtheiconographiccareerofthepostcardhascontinueduntilthistime.lnPortugal,unlikeothercountries,wedonotyethaveanycatalogsorsystematicinventariesavailableofthatvaluableiconographicsource"(inCuidetotheHistoryoftheFirstRepublic,EditorialEstampa,Lisboa,1981,page533).Nowtheperiodofthelaunchandofexpansionofthepostcard-fromtheendofthe19thcentw-ytothefirstthreeorfourdecadesofthe20thcentury-coincidespreciselywiththestageofoccupationandeffectivecolonizationofAfrica,andofgreaterattentionandinterestbeinggivenbyliberalmonarchygovernmentsandbythetwofirstrepublicstooverseasajfairs.Oneonlyhastoremembertwokeydates:theGeographicalSocietyofLisbonwasfoundedin1875,andtheJnternationalBerlinConference,wherenewcriteriaofcolonialsovereignityweredefined,washeldin1885.Jtisnotpossibletofidlyvisualizethespaces,thetoolsanelthecharactersofPortugalsrecenthistoryinthetropicallandsofAfricaandintheEast,whichbegantomaterializeandtodevelopattheendofthe19thcentury,withoutresortingtopostcards.ThecollectionthatIhavecompileclconcerningthecountriesanelterritoriesthatmadeuptheformerOverseashas,ontheotherhand,atimelimitwhichcorrespondsto1975,whenindependenceproceduresgrantedbytheThirdRepublicofPortugalwerecompleted.OnlyMacauisleftnow,untilDecember1999.Throughtheitemsthatarepartofthecollection,onecanrevisitthecitiesandthevil/ages,publicanelreligiousbuildings,plantationsandfarms,businessactivitiesandmarkets,bridgesandrailroads,humantypesandtheircustoms;also,onecanlookbaclconoutstandingevents,suchasthemilita,-yoperationsinSouthernAngolaatthebeginningofthecentury,orthePrinceLuísFilipesjourneytothecolonies,theproclamationoftheRepublicin
CapeVerdeorinMozambique,andthefirstindustrialfairofMacauin1926.ItisalsothepostcardwhichmaIcesitpossibletoseewhatplacesandsiteswerefiicewherelargePortuguesecommunitieswerecreatedorsettleddown.Therefore,/believethatthesizeandthescopeofthiscollectionplaceit,rightfi'omtheoutset-andpleaseforgivemyimmodesty-asanimportantsourceofcontemporaryHistory,notonlyforPortugalbutalsoforthevariousPortuguesespealcingcountriesandterritories.Isthisnotagoodenoughreasonforventuringintoitsdivulgation,bypublishingitandthroughothertypesofinitiativeswhichmightmakeitknownandavailabletoalithosewhomightbeinterested?Aren'tthethousandsofpostcardsthatcompleteitanunchangeableandaccuratePortuguesememoryofA/ricaandtheParEast?ANEXHIBITIONINMACAUAroundtheendofOctober1994,byinitiativeofFundaçãoMacau,/presentedaselectedsampleofapproximatelyfourhundredpostcardsattheLealSenadoLibrary.Onthatoccasion,/cameacrossaremarkablealbumcalled"ThePastofMacau-ACollectionofPostcards".fthadbeenrecentlypublishedwiththesponsorshipoftheFoundation,anditsauthorwasHoWengHong,whocompiledandsubtitled107antiquepostcardsfromMacauthatbelongedtovariouscollectorsoftheterritory.Theauthoralsotellsusthat,inthatsarneyear,hehadvisitedacollectorsfairinHongKong,andthatalongwithanabundanceofpostcardsfromthatcity,ofChinaandSingapore,postcardsfromMacauwereextremelyrareandveryexpensive!Hongonlywasabletojindone,whichheboughtfor25poundssterling.HisbookgoesontosaythatMacaupostcardsfromtheendofthe19thcentury,arbeginningofthe20thcentury,giventheirrarity,canreachpricesrangingfrom300to1000patacasI/thenbecamecuriousanddidsomeresearchinardertofindoutwhetherMacauspublicarchivesco11firmedtheallegedrarity.KindlyassistedbyM1êJorgeArrima,~/confirmedthattheHistoricalArchiveofMacauonlyhasafewpresentdaycopiesofantiquepostcards,andthattheCentralLibraryonlyhascolouredpostcardcollectionsdatedafterthe60s,incompliancewithlegalregistrationrequirements.fhadalreadyascertainedthattheHistoricalOverseasArchiveinLisbonhadaverysmalllotof17postcardsofMacau,andthattheNationalLibraryonlyhad100copiesonfile,ofwhichonly55weredatedpriortoWorldWarII.ABOOKISBORNBasedontheabovecircumstances,andfollowingthatexhibition,/decidedtosuggestthepublishingofthisalbumshowing181antiquepostcardsfromMacautotheMacauFoundation.ThosepostcardswereselectedamongtheslightlyovertwohundredpostcardsthatmaIceupthefillingboxconcerningtheterritory(previousto1970).Iconsiderthistobeasampleofwellbalancedsizeandsufficientvarietywithinthetheme,notonlyincomparisontoHoWengHongsalbum,butalsowithregardtothesecondeditionofanexcellentpublicationcalled"SingaporeHistoricalPostcards"(fi-omtheNationalArchiveCollection),whichIboughtmonthsagointhatcity,andwhichincludes157itemsshowinglocationsandstreetscenes,harboursand:meansoftransportation,andaspectsoftheimmigrantsocietyfromtheformerBritishsettlementinthestraits.Thecriterionofsystematizingchaptersandsub-chaptersappearedtomeasadequateforquiclcreference.Furthertothesubtitles,publishersandprobabledates,itincludessomebriefnotesthat/wrotebasedonmyknowledgeaboutMacauwhichIacquiredinthecourseofninetripstotheterritory-1970,1981,1983,1985,1986,1989,1990,1992and1994-andinvariousbooksonthesubject./wouldliketoaskthereadertoforgivemeforanyinaccuracyonthosenotes,whichareinfactmoreinterestingforthegeneralreaderthanforexperts.Obviously,theboolcisoriginalandrareduetoitsantiquepostcards,andnotforthewritersreasoning!Finally,Iwouldfiicetoexpressmywishthatthisalbumo/AntiquePostcardsfromMacau,withwhich/wishtobegintheseriesonPortugueseMemoryofAfricaandtheParEast,willprovidemomentsofjoyandpleasuretoalithosewho,somehow,havetieswiththefascinatingandcharmingterritoryofMacau.INTRODUCTION]3
