歐洲極負盛名的漢學家，多年來潛心研究澳門學、中西交通、媽祖信仰、海洋史等多個領域。著有《正德〈瓊台志．禽之屬〉譯注》（The Earliest Extant Bird List of Hainan, An Annotated Translation of the Avian Section in Qiongtai zhi）、《三寶太監西洋記通俗演義之研究》（Studies on the novel Sanbao taijian Xiyang ji tongsu yanyi）、《澳門過渡：澳門歷史及經濟近況五項研究》（Macau in transition. Five studies on the history and economy of the territory in the recent past）等著作。
